Watering new trees & shrubs

The most important factor in the survival of a new plant is watering properly. Unfortunately there is no one answer as to how much to water. In general it is better to water heavier and less frequently than frequent short watering's. The soil should be kept moist but not soggy. More new plants die from too much water than not enough water. This happens in heavy clay soils or in over irrigated fescue lawns. Areas that are too wet will actually suffocates the roots from lack of oxygen. Too dry can be a problem too. Try to find a happy medium.

  • 1. Container grown plant may require more frequent watering than a balled and burlaped plants.
  • 2. Certain plant require more water than others. For instance River birch require more water, Redbuds prefer to be drier.
  • 3. Sandy soil requires more frequent watering than clay soil.
  • 4. Pay attentions to weather conditions. A plant will use more water during hot windy weather than cool overcast days
