Lawn Care
- If you plan to completely renovate your lawn, start spraying Hi Yield’s Killzall around the 10th of the month. You may need to spray two mores times to eliminate some grassy weeds.
- Fertilize lawns now only if it is absolutely necessary. Only slow-release products should be used. Milorganite is a good choice that won’t burn in the heat.
- If grubs damage your lawn, treat them with BioAvanced 24-hour grub killer.
Gardens and Pests
- Spider mites often get worse during hot, dry summers. The first sign of their presence is pale, dirty-looking patches of foliage. While nearly invisible to the naked eye, shake the branch of a plant over a piece of white paper and then smear your finger across it. If they are present, they should leave tiny red streaks.
- When treating pests, be sure to spray early in the morning before the heat of the day to avoid burning the plant’s foliage. Oils especially can burn if the temperature is over 85 and should only be used as a last resort this time of year.
- Plant fall vegetable gardens (kale, lettuce, radish, spinach, and turnip) in mid-to late-August.
Trees and Shrubs
- Water new trees and shrubs deeply and infrequently.
- Continue to watch for pests. Bagworms often stop feeding at this point in the year, so hand-picking is the only way to control them.
- Now is a good time to purchase trees and shrubs. Tree Top Nursery will hold them for fall planting.
