Basic Houseplant Care

Houseplants add color, texture, and life to our homes—and most of them are surprisingly easy to care for. While some specialty plants (like orchids, African violets, air plants, and Venus flytraps) have unique needs, the majority of popular houseplants thrive with the same basic routine. Here’s a simple, reliable guide to help keep your plants healthy year-round.

Quick Houseplant Care Tips

  • Provide bright, indirect light
  • Water only when the top inch of soil is dry
  • Use pots with drainage holes
  • Fertilize lightly during the growing season
  • Repot only when necessary

Light Requirements

Most houseplants prefer bright, indirect light. A few guidelines:

  • East- and west-facing windows are ideal for balanced light.
  • South-facing windows can work, but avoid all-day direct sun from large windows.
  • Pale, leggy growth usually means plants need more light.
  • Too much hot, direct sun can burn leaves.

Summer Tip: Moving Plants Outdoors

Once nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F, many houseplants enjoy time outside.

  • Place plants in full shade to prevent leaf burn.
  • Outdoor conditions help plants fill out and store energy.
  • Expect to water more frequently while plants are outdoors.

Watering

Proper watering is the most important step in houseplant care.

General Watering Guidelines

  • Most houseplants need water about once a week indoors.
  • Check soil moisture first—if the top inch is dry, it’s time to water.
  • Water thoroughly until water drains from the bottom of the pot.
  • Empty saucers after watering to prevent root rot.

Plants That Need Less Water

Some houseplants prefer drier soil and need watering only every 2–3 weeks:

  • Succulents
  • ZZ plants
  • Sansevieria (Snake plants)

Always use soil moisture as your guide rather than watering on a schedule.

Fertilizing

Houseplants are light feeders.

  • Fertilize once a month during spring, summer, and fall.
  • Houseplant fertilizers work best, but a balanced 10-10-10 is fine.
  • Skip fertilizing during winter when growth slows.
  • Over-fertilizing in low light can cause weak, stretched growth.

Repotting

Most houseplants do not need frequent repotting.

When to Repot

  • You want the plant to grow larger, or
  • The pot is cracking or roots are tightly circling the pot.

Choosing the Right Pot Size

  • Select a pot only 1 inch wider than the current container.
  • Oversized pots hold excess moisture and increase the risk of root rot.

Extra Houseplant Care Tips

Cleaning Leaves

Dust blocks light and reduces plant health.

  • Rinse plants in the shower.
  • Wipe leaves with a damp cloth.
  • Leaf shine products are fine for occasional use.
  • Rain will naturally clean plants placed outdoors.

Managing Pests

If insects appear:

  • For small plants, use rubbing alcohol on a cotton pad or Q-tip.
  • For larger plants or heavier infestations, use a houseplant-safe insecticide formulated for indoor use.
