Euonymus scale is one of the most damaging scale insects in our area and can cause severe leaf yellowing, defoliation, and even plant death if left untreated. In addition to euonymus shrubs, this pest can also infest pachysandra groundcover.
Quick Euonymus Scale Tips
- Causes yellowing and whitening of leaves
- Variegated euonymus is especially susceptible
- Adults are protected by a waxy shell
- Crawler stage is the best time to treat
- Multiple treatments are usually required
What Is Euonymus Scale?
Euonymus scale insects are small (about 1/8 inch), sap-feeding pests with sucking mouthparts. As they feed, they remove nutrients from the plant, causing yellowing on the upper leaf surface.
In heavy infestations, the branched and undersides of leaves may appear white due to large numbers of male scales.
Plants Commonly Affected
- Euonymus (especially variegated varieties)
- Pachysandra groundcover
Life Cycle and Timing
Euonymus scale overwinters as pregnant females and can produce up to three generations per year in Kansas.
As scales mature, they develop a hard, waxy coating that protects them from insecticides. Because of this, control is most effective during the crawler stage, when young scales are active and moving.
When Treatment Is Necessary
If infestations are light and not recurring, treatment may not be required. Natural predators can help suppress small populations.
However, repeated infestations or visible leaf damage indicate the need for active management.
Treatment Recommendations
- May–June: Apply insecticides such as Hi-Yield 38 Plus, Hi-Yield Bug Blaster Bifenthrin 2.4, Bonide All-Season Oil, or Bonide Systemic Insect Control. Repeat applications 3–4 times at 10-day intervals to target crawlers.
- Late August–Early September: Repeat treatments when the second generation of crawlers emerges.
- Winter: Apply horticultural oil (such as Bonide All-Season Oil) to help suffocate overwintering females.
Effective Long-Term Control
Because euonymus scale produces multiple generations each year, consistent treatment at the correct life stage is essential for long-term control. Missing crawler windows often leads to recurring infestations.
