Overseeding is the most effective way to thicken a fescue lawn, repair thin areas, and improve overall turf health. When done correctly, overseeding helps crowd out weeds and prepares your lawn for a strong start the following spring.
Quick Lawn Overseeding Tips
- Overseed fescue lawns in early fall
- Use 4–6 lbs of seed per 1,000 square feet
- Soil contact is critical for germination
- Keep seed consistently moist until established
- Do not let new seed dry out
How Much Seed Do You Need?
Before overseeding, determine the size of the area you’re treating. Fescue lawns should be overseeded at a rate of 4–6 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

Choose Quality Grass Seed
Select a high-quality grass seed blend, such as Tree Top’s Premium Fescue Blend. Avoid low-cost seed mixes, which often contain weed seeds that are difficult to remove without damaging your lawn.
Fertilizer and Soil Preparation
Applying the right products at seeding time helps new grass establish faster.
- Starter fertilizer: Apply Ferti-lome New Lawn Starter when seeding to support early root growth.
- Soil health: Natural Guard HuMic Granular Humic Acid improves microbial activity, helping convert fertilizer into usable nutrients for new grass.
Equipment Needed
Proper equipment greatly improves seed-to-soil contact and germination rates.
- Verticutter / seeder
- Fertilizer spreader
A verticutter creates shallow grooves in the lawn, forming an ideal seedbed and lightly incorporating seed into the soil.
Prepare the Lawn
- Mow the lawn to approximately 1.5 inches
- Mark all sprinkler heads to avoid damage during verticutting
Verticut the Lawn
- Verticut in one direction, then again at a 45-degree angle
- Remove debris using a rake or mower with a bag attachment
Seeding and Fertilizing
- Broadcast seed evenly using a low spreader setting
- Continue until all seed is applied
- Apply Ferti-lome New Lawn Starter and HuMic at recommended rates
Watering New Seed
Water frequently with short, light waterings to keep seed consistently moist. If seed dries out at any point, it will die.
First Mowing
Mow the new grass once it reaches about 3 inches tall.
- Set mower height to 2 inches for the first mowing
- Gradually raise mowing height to 3 inches as grass matures
Post-Seeding Fertilization
After 30 days, apply Ferti-lome Winterizer to strengthen the developing root system and prepare the lawn for winter.
