Sago Palm Care

The Sago Palm (Cycas revoluta) is a striking plant with feathery, symmetrical fronds and a timeless appeal. Despite its name, it is not a true palm but a cycad, one of the oldest groups of plants on Earth.

Light Requirements: Sago palms thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct morning sun, but prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight can scorch their fronds. Indoors, place the plant near a window with filtered sunlight. Outdoors, partial shade is ideal, especially in hotter climates.

Watering: Sago palms prefer their soil to dry out between waterings. Water moderately during the growing season, ensuring the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry before rewatering. In winter, reduce watering significantly. Be cautious of overwatering, as this plant is prone to root rot in soggy soil.

Care: Maintaining your sago palm involves occasional pruning to remove yellowing or damaged fronds. The plant thrives in average room temperatures of 65–85°F and does best with good airflow. Avoid exposing it to frost, drafts, or sudden temperature changes.

Fertilization: Feed the plant with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer (10-10-10) every 2–3 months during the growing season (spring through summer). Skip fertilization in the dormant winter months to avoid overfeeding.

Other Details: The sago palm is a slow grower, often producing only one set of new fronds per year. It is highly toxic to pets and humans if ingested, particularly the seeds. For those seeking an exotic, low-maintenance addition to their home, the sago palm offers elegance and longevity with proper care.
