This variety of abelia is grown for its pink, trumpet-shaped flowers and glossy foliage. The pink abelia is fairly compact, growing 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. The flowers are small but showy and bloom from late spring until fall. The dark green leaves are extremely glossy and semi-evergreen. On very mild winters, this shrub is evergreen.
This shrub likes full sun to part shade. It prefers moist soils but cannot tolerate saturated soils. It prefers sites that are protected in the winter, and stems can die back in exposed sites. It may need trimming in the spring to remove dead branches. It will lose its arching habit if sheared. It does not have any other major pest problems. The Pink Abelia works well for foundation plantings or as a specimen.
