Ajuga Chocolate Chip
2" Tall 24-36" Wide

This miniature groundcover, Ajuga ‘Chocolate Chip,’ has striking bronze foliage and spring bloom spikes. The oval leaves emerge as a rich purple-bronze before maturing to dark green later in the season. In late spring, lavender-blue flower spikes appear, creating an attractive display, especially when planted in masses.

Ajuga has a spreading habit and forms a dense carpet over time. It grows about 2 inches tall and will spread to less than a foot within two years. While adaptable, it can develop root rot in poorly drained, wet conditions. Consistent moisture helps the plant maintain its best appearance. Ajuga thrives in part sun to shade, though shade may reduce the vibrancy of its foliage color.

After blooming, large patches can be mowed to keep them tidy. Care should be taken when planting near uniform lawns, as Ajuga can spread into grass. ‘Chocolate Chip’ Ajuga is ideal for small spaces under trees where grass struggles to grow. It also works beautifully between stepping stones, in containers, or along walkways, where its foliage and blooms can be fully appreciated.
