As its name suggests, this large apple has yellow to golden-green skin. It is a delightful apple eaten fresh with a sweet taste and crisp white flesh. It also works well for apple sauce, pies, and preserves. They ripen from late September through October. They also store well for 3 to 6 months with refrigeration. The tree is a vigorous grower that is resistant to most diseases. This is the SAME tree as the Yellow Delicious apple.
Golden Delicious apples are good pollinators for other apple varieties and are partly self-fertile but will bear better with another apple tree nearby. Plant them within 100 feet of the other tree. In windy areas like Kansas, 20 feet apart will ensure much better pollination. Good varieties for cross-pollinating Golden Delicious include the Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Red Delicious, and Granny Smith apples.
