This native shrub is valued for its stunning fall display of red berries and vibrant red foliage. A somewhat slow grower, it reaches 6 to 8 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, staying more compact than the species. In spring, it produces clusters of delicate white flowers, which eventually mature into clusters of glossy red berries. While the berries are edible, they are quite sour and bitter but can be used to make preserves. The berries remain on the shrub well into winter, adding color once the leaves have fallen.
The glossy green leaves turn a brilliant red in the fall, further enhancing its appeal. Chokeberries thrive in full sun, though they will also tolerate part shade. Adaptable to a variety of soil types, they can grow in both saturated and dry conditions. They have few pest or disease problems, though leaf spot may occasionally appear, and they may spread by suckers if not managed. Deer typically avoid them.
Pruning can be done after flowering, but cutting back will reduce the berry display.
The Brilliant Red Chokeberry is perfect for wildlife gardens, shrub borders, or areas near streams or damp spots, where it can naturalize and provide multi-season interest
