This evergreen is grown for its light green foliage and good garden habit. The Compact Sawara is naturally pyramidal and grows 6 feet tall and 5 feet wide with time. Its needles are finely textured and cover the branches all the way to the ground, so it doesn’t need shrubs in front of it to cover bald spots.
It prefers moist but well-drained soil and shouldn’t be allowed to dry out or stand in water. It will perform best in acidic soils with a good layer of mulch and can tolerate urban conditions. It will tolerate full sun to part shade. There are no significant pests or diseases on this variety. The Compact Sawara False Cypress works well as a hedge or accent plant and won’t outgrow smaller areas.
