Northern Sea oats are grown for their arching form and multiple showy seedheads.  Flat, oval clusters of seed heads emerge green in the summer on arching stems, turning reddish tan in the fall.  They last well, adding winter interest.  The arching stems of grass are bright green throughout the summer.  This grass works well for foundation plantings, shade gardens, and massing.

This grass is low maintenance and only needs to be cut back once in late spring.  It prefers moist, well-drained soil and will grow in full sun to almost full shade.  It does not have any serious pest or disease problems.
