The hackberry is a large tree grown as a shade or street tree. It has oval shaped green leaves and developes grey, furrowed bark. It also has small purple fruit in late summer that’s attractive to birds. This tree has a rounded to spreading form and can reach 40 feet tall and wide, occasionally larger. It is extremely tough and can withstand severe drought, wet soils, heavy clay and partial shade.
