This compact broadleaf evergreen is prized for its dark, glossy foliage and upright form. A slow-growing variety, it reaches 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for small spaces. The dense, spiny leaves are a deep green that turn rich purple in winter for added seasonal interest.
As a male variety, Scallywag® Holly does not produce berries but can serve as a pollinator for female blue hollies. It thrives in full to part sun, though it benefits from afternoon shade in warmer climates and protection from winter winds. It adapts to various soil types, with a preference for slightly acidic conditions to prevent chlorosis. It also offers improved disease resistance over other blue hollies.
Scallywag Holly is ideal for foundation plantings, low evergreen borders, or small accent shrubs, providing year-round interest in mixed gardens.
