This moderately sized shrub produces large panicles of blooms that undergo a stunning color transformation as they mature. Reaching 3 to 5 feet wide, it features strong stems capable of supporting its substantial blooms. Emerging in mid-summer, the flowers start as lime green and transition through white and light pink, eventually reaching a deep magenta pink. The shrub’s large green leaves may turn red in the fall, adding seasonal interest.

While this variety can tolerate full sun, it performs best with afternoon shade. Hydrangeas thrive in evenly moist soil, though they don’t tolerate saturation. They can withstand brief periods of drought but prefer soil rich in organic matter, with mulch around their roots to retain moisture. To encourage more blooms, it’s recommended to cut back about 1/3 of the plant in early spring.

While leaf spot, rust, and mildew may occasionally appear, they are generally not serious problems. Aphids and mites can also be occasional visitors.

The Little Lime Punch Hydrangea works beautifully as a specimen or accent plant, but it can also be massed together for a stunning effect. It also makes a great choice for a border or foundation planting, where its dynamic color changes can be appreciated.
