Golden Japanese Forest Grass
Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’
This grass is excellent for shady locations and has interesting variegated foliage that is green to gold. In the fall it often picks up pink as well. It spreads wider than tall. It stays very low and slowly spreads but is not invasive. It works well mixed with hostas and other shade plants. It is fairly low maintenance but needs to be trimmed back while dormant. It prefers part shade but can tolerate almost full shade, although it will lose some of its color. This grass prefers consistently moist conditions and is more likely to sun scorch if not watered well.
