This dense evergreen is grown for its year-round bluish-grey color and compact nature. Its short needles are arranged around the twigs in a unique formation and stay their characteristic color throughout the year. The small berrylike cones are also blue. This shrub only grows to 1 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide.
It is tolerant of poor soils and sandy soils but cannot tolerate saturated soils. It needs full sun to thrive and is heat tolerant and somewhat drought tolerant once established. Watch for bagworms on any juniper. The Blue Star Juniper works well as a low specimen, a groundcover, or as part of a rock garden.
