Shademater locust is a rapid grower with a straight trunk and a spreading branch structure, creating a vase shape.  Its small compound leaves turn yellow in the fall and cast a dappled shade that is conducive to lawns.  It is drought resistant, completely thornless, and fruitless and is considered to be the best honey locust variety.

It is tolerant of a large variety of soils and conditions.
