Yuka Jima Maiden Grass
Miscanthus sinensis ‘Yaku Jima’
This dwarf maiden grass grows to 3 to 4 feet tall. It has long thin blades with a silver vein that is dark green throughout the summer. In the fall, silver plumes appear well above the foliage. It blooms remains attractive during the winter. This grass has a graceful, arching form. It may turn reddish-brown in the winter, then fades to tan. It works well as a foundation plant or short screen. It prefers full sun to part shade but will lose its color in more shade. It will tolerate drought once established and a wide variety of soils including heavy clay. It is low maintenance, only needing to be cut back once a year in early spring. It does not have any serious pest or disease problems in our area.
