Plum Pasion Nandina is a semi-evergreen shrub that is grown for its upright form, leaf color, and berries. This nandina grows to about 4 to 5 feet tall by 3 to 4 feet wide. Its leaves change colors throughout the year, from purple in spring, to dark green, to reddish-purple in the fall, persisting into the winter. Leaves are compound, resembling bamboo, and will last through the winter in sheltered locations. It has white clusters of blooms in the spring that are followed by red berries in the winter if the plant is pollinated.
It prefers full sun to full shade but will perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade. It will adapt to a wide range of soils and is somewhat drought tolerant when established but performs best when consistently watered. This shrub works well as a foundation grouping where it’s more likely to produce berries.
