This compact shrub is grown for its colorful foliage and spring flowers. It grows 3 to 4 feet tall and wide with a naturally rounded form. The small leaves emerge deep burgundy in spring and hold their color well through summer. In late spring, it produces clusters of small white to soft pink flowers that contrast nicely with the dark foliage.
This plant grows best in full sun but will tolerate some light shade. It is adaptable to a range of soil types and is drought-tolerant once established. Use it as a foundation plant, in mixed borders, or massed for a colorful, low-maintenance hedge. Its peeling bark adds winter interest.
