This distinctive evergreen is prized for its unique needles, pyramidal form, and rich green winter color. When young, it has a compact pyramidal shape and grows very slowly, eventually reaching 25 to 30 feet in height and 15 to 20 feet in width. Its bright green, flattened needles emerge in a whorled pattern from the branch tips, resembling the spokes of an umbrella—hence its name.

Thriving in full sun to partial shade, this tree benefits from afternoon shade in hot climates. It requires consistently moist, fertile, well-drained soil and is sensitive to drying out. While it has no serious insect or disease issues, it should be sheltered from winter winds in our region to prevent dieback.
