Prairie Dropseed is a small grass that has fine, hair-like foliage that has good green color throughout the summer. Its seedheads are airy and have pink tints. The seedheads also have an interesting fragrance, somewhere between popcorn and coriander. The leaves take on bronze to orange hues in the fall and fade to light bronze in the winter. The arching foliage only grows to 18 inches tall, with the airy blooms rising much higher above the plant. It works well for massing, foundation plantings, and low-maintenance areas.
It is very drought tolerant and prefers a wide variety of soils but grows best in dry, rocky soils. It prefers full sun and does not have any serious pest or disease problems.
