This striking large shrub is admired for its tropical-looking blooms and easy care. Reaching 5 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 7 feet wide, it grows in an upright, vase-shaped form. Its semi-double flowers are highly decorative, with smaller petals surrounding the central, larger petals. These blooms, which can reach up to 3 inches across, open as white with red centers and gradually fade to pale pink, often displaying both shades on a single flower. The medium green, maple-shaped leaves add further beauty to the shrub.
Rose of Sharon thrives in full sun, performing best in hot locations, though it will also tolerate part sun and cooler spots. It adapts well to clay soils but prefers rich, evenly moist conditions. Once established, it becomes drought-tolerant. Resistant to deer, it may occasionally face issues with aphids, Japanese beetles, or leaf spots. Pruning in winter is recommended if necessary.
The Fiji Rose of Sharon works beautifully as a backdrop in a shrub border or large foundation planting. It also makes an excellent accent plant and can be used to create effective screens.
