The Shumard Oak is a large tree that is both ornamental and an excellent shade tree. It has a very upright habit and grows faster than many oaks once established. The distinctive, deep-cut leaves can turn red to reddish-brown in the fall.
This is a durable and long-lived tree. It tolerates a wide range of conditions and soils, including wet soils and drought. It doesn’t begin producing acorns until it’s about 25 years of age.
