This small tree or large shrub is grown for its large, airy blooms and excellent foliage color. It reaches 12 to 15 feet tall and wide. Red, round leaves emerge in the spring and mature to a purple color throughout the growing season before finally coloring orange or red in the fall. Large, airy, pink blooms appear in summer and can be up to 6 inches long.
This plant grows in sun to part shade and tolerates poor, alkaline soils. It is somewhat drought-tolerant and cannot tolerate wet soils. This plant works best as an accent or in a prairie garden.
